Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso
Pubblicato : Venerdì, 5 Gennaio, 2024 - 10:47
A place of ancient charm, in the Hermitage of Santa Caterina nature, art and history merge with the rock of Sasso Ballaro to which it clings, like a silent guardian of the waters of Lake Maggiore. The chapel, which dates back to the end of the 12th century, was soon flanked by two other churches, that of Santa Maria Nove and that of San Nicola or Nicolao, protector of sailors. Over the centuries, first the Dominicans, then the Ambrosians, then the Carmelites stayed there. Since 2019, religious management has been entrusted to the Franciscan Fraternity of Bethany.

Sesto Calende stands in a very picturesque location, at the exact point where Lake Maggiore becomes the Ticino River. The very lively town has a very pleasant 'lungofiume' (riverside) promenade, suitable for all, and suitable for cyclists who choose to ride southwards, in the Ticino Park, pedalling as far as Pavia or as far as Milan, in which case first along the Ticino river and then along the Villoresi Canal and the Naviglio Grande on a cycle path.

Cannobio
Pubblicato : Giovedì, 28 Dicembre, 2023 - 20:42
The last Italian outpost before the Swiss border, the centre of Cannobio is particularly picturesque with clusters of pastel-coloured houses overlooking a labyrinth of cobbled alleyways. Via al Castello is an ancient street that has remained virtually untouched for centuries, with toutuous stairways winding between multi-storeyed houses. The promenade, one of the most beautiful on Lake Maggiore, is embellished with historic structures, arcades, boutiques and cafés on one side and the beach and water on the other. The promenade culminates in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, the most important square in town.

Cannero Riviera. The castles
Pubblicato : Giovedì, 28 Dicembre, 2023 - 12:39
These spectacular castles, known as 'Malpaga', emerge on the waters of the lake giving the impression of floating. A couple of kilometres from the urban centre, they stand on two small islands and today are only ruins. Fortified during the Middle Ages, they served to control trade in Switzerland. After a series of long and bloody sieges they underwent various changes of ownership until they became the property of the Borremeo family in the 16th century. The family still owns it today. The purity of the surrounding waters has earned it a blue flag.

Cannero Riviera. Town centre and lakefront
Pubblicato : Giovedì, 28 Dicembre, 2023 - 10:19
Situated on a promontory, thanks to a natural inlet, it enjoys the enviable privilege of being sheltered from the cold winter winds. The very mild climate allows the growth of luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation characterised by citrus fruits, palms and olive trees and favours the early blossoming of the famous camellias which, together with rhododendrons and azaleas, transform the town into a lush flowering balcony overlooking the lake. Typically medieval are the narrow alleys in which you can stroll, discovering ancient dwellings or picturesque views such as the small harbour carved out of the rock.

Feriolo
Pubblicato : Domenica, 24 Dicembre, 2023 - 13:54
A small hamlet of Baveno overlooking the Borromean Gulf of Lake Maggiore, Feriolo immediately captivates visitors with its brightly coloured houses, boats moored in the small harbour, and enchanting views of Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands. A walk along the lakeside promenade will give you a beautiful view of this scenery, and at night it will give you a very romantic feeling, with the thousands of lights from the street lamps reflected on the water mirror. The waters also hold the remains of the old 'submerged village' destroyed by a landslide.
