Verbania. Villa Giulia

Pubblicato : Samedi, 23 décembre, 2023 - 16:50

This historic building is closely associated with the Branca family, inventors of one of Italy's most famous liqueurs: Fernet. The extension work on the previous building (1845) took two attempts, the first one sinking disastrously into the lake, taking a grand staircase with it. After several changes of ownership in 1932, it was transformed into Kursaal, the Municipal Casino, which became a discotheque in the 1960s. Today it is owned by the municipality, which uses it for exhibitions and fairs.

Verbania. Church of Madonna di Campagna

Pubblicato : Lundi, 18 décembre, 2023 - 20:26

This striking Renaissance church was built on a pre-existing Romanesque building, of which the bell tower (11th century) and a few traces of walls remain today. On the outside, in addition to the gabled façade clad with square blocks of serizzo, the high octagonal tiburium, pierced by continuous loggias and surmounted by an aerial lantern, is striking. The three-nave interior is adorned with splendid works of art. Also of great value are the wooden choir and a richly carved lectern.

Verbania. Church of San Remigio

Pubblicato : Lundi, 18 décembre, 2023 - 18:04

This 11th-12th century Romanesque oratory stands on the Castagnola promontory in a wonderful panoramic position. Changes over the years have not affected the original structure with two naves ending in two semicircular apses. Inside, there are frescoes dating from various periods up to the 16th century. The oldest, located in the minor apse, depicts a blessing Christ above a figure that could be Riprando, bishop of Novara.

Verbania. Villa Taranto

Pubblicato : Dimanche, 17 décembre, 2023 - 19:48

Thousands of species of flowers and plants from all over the world, harmoniously distributed over some 16 hectares, make it one of the most important botanical gardens in the world. In an English style with many Italian influences (statues, fountains, waterfalls and pools of water), from March to November the blooms follow one another, with special events organised to pay homage to these spectacles of colour. Above all, there is the Tulip Week, where tens of thousands of bulbs open to the visitor's view.

Verbania. Intra

Pubblicato : Dimanche, 17 décembre, 2023 - 17:09

In reality, Verbania is more of a union of four municipalities (Pallanza, Intra, Fondotoce and Suna) and several hamlets rather than a real municipality. Intra boasts a charming historic centre with palaces with clear baroque and neoclassical signs left by an ancient and refined bourgeoisie. Its lakeside promenade is wide and relaxing, and along it we can find the old Imbarcadero, an evocative late 19th century construction, and the old port, characterised at its entrance by an imposing granite column.

Verbania. Pallanza

Pubblicato : Dimanche, 17 décembre, 2023 - 11:24

In reality, Verbania is more a union of four municipalities (Pallanza, Intra, Fondotoce and Suna) and several hamlets than a real municipality. One of these, Pallanza, is a town of rare beauty, with its historic buildings and panoramic views of Lake Maggiore. Amidst baroque palaces and villas dating from the 1700s and 1800s, the lakeside promenade stretches majestically with a beautiful view of the Isola Madre and the small island of San Giovanni, a prized site owned by the Borromeo family but not open to the public.

Similarly, the small centre also enjoys various attractions, above all the square stone Church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius.

Stresa. Villa Ducale

Pubblicato : Samedi, 16 décembre, 2023 - 11:52

Also known as Palazzo Bolongaro, it is the oldest historical villa in Stresa, having traces of its existence as far back as 1771. In the mid-19th century, it became the holiday residence of the Duchess of Genoa, Elisabeth of Saxony, wife of Carlo Alberto's second son. Since then it began to be called Villa Ducale and became a meeting place for European nobility. Today it is home to the International Centre for Rosminian Studies, with a museum dedicated to the philosopher and an important library.
