Thanks to its imposing size and excellent state of preservation, Galliate Castle is one of the most important fortified buildings in Piedmont. Built at the end of the 13th century at the behest of the Visconti family of Milan, it served a strategic function, controlling the territory and the communication routes along the Ticino River. The brick structure has a quadrangular layout with imposing walls, corner towers and a large internal courtyard. Over the centuries, the castle was enlarged several times and adapted into a stately residence and administrative headquarters. Today, it houses the municipal library, the Museum of Contemporary Art and exhibition halls for exhibitions and conferences. Events of all kinds are held in the inner courtyard throughout the year.
