Isola Pescatori (Fishermen's Island)

Pubblicato : Jeudi, 7 décembre, 2023 - 21:23

The only one of the three Borromean islands to be permanently inhabited, this small community fascinates with the liveliness and warmth of its narrow streets. Of the two main streets, one runs through the village and the other runs alongside the lake. On one side of the little island you can relax in the shade of the large plane trees, while on the other side you can admire the view of Isola Bella, which is only a few metres away. The church of San Vittore, dating back to the year 1000 but completely rebuilt during the 17th and 18th centuries, is worth a visit.

Isola Bella. The gardens

Pubblicato : Jeudi, 7 décembre, 2023 - 14:20

For almost 200 years, a large camphore has been welcoming visitors as they pass through the large garden gate. From here one faces the splendid Amphitheatre, which scenically occupies the central part of the island. The Baroque garden is laid out on terraces at different heights, alternating statues, obelisks, flights of steps and stone balustrades. The garden paths lead up to the largest terrace, from which there is a wonderful view of the lake and the garden itself.

Isola Bella. Palazzo Borromeo

This palace is a veritable treasure trove of Baroque art suspended over the water. Visiting it one passes through elegantly furnished salons, which offer incredible views of Lake Maggiore. Paintings by famous artists, fine furniture, antique sculptures, marble, neoclassical stuccoes, Flemish silk and gold armour and tapestries. Not to be missed is the General Berthier gallery with its 130 paintings as well as the pebble-covered grottos on the lower floor, a place of coolness and delight.

Isola Bella. History and the name

Pubblicato : Mercredi, 6 décembre, 2023 - 18:32

Few tourists imagine that the name 'Bella' is not related to the adjective "pretty" , a well-deserved tribute to its artistic and scenic beauty, but derives from the name of Isabella d'Adda. Her husband, Count and Marquis Carlo Borromeo III, in fact decided to dedicate this small island, which was then known as Lower Island (Upper Island was instead what is now known as Isola Pescatori or Fishermen's Island), to her. The construction of the palace and garden contributed to making this island beautiful beyond doubt.

Arona. Rocca Borromea

Pubblicato : Mardi, 5 décembre, 2023 - 18:51

Together with its twin Rocca di Angera, the Rocca di Arona was one of the main strategic control points of Lake Maggiore in ancient times. Unfortunately, we only have a few ruins of it after its destruction in 1800 at the hands of the Napoleonic army. Today it houses a park, where you can take relaxing walks and admire the remains of the ancient walls as well as suggestive views of Arona and the southern part of Lake Maggiore.

Arona. San Carlone

Pubblicato : Mardi, 5 décembre, 2023 - 13:45

There are not many towns that can boast a gigantic cusctode angel watching over them. The majestic statue of St Charles Borromeo towers on the hill not too far from the town centre of Arona. More than 23 metres high, with a pedestal of almost 12, it is one of the tallest indoor statues in the world, second only to the Statue of Liberty. Thanks to its openings at eye level, ears and from small windows along its robe, it is possible to admire the view of the lake.

Arona. Piazza del Popolo

Pubblicato : Mardi, 5 décembre, 2023 - 11:01

Whether you have chosen the Lakeside promenade or the Budello as the route for your visit to Arona, Piazza del Popolo will be the elegant finale of this walk. Formerly called Piazza Mercato, it housed the town market as well as the commercial port. Today it enhances our visit with its splendid view of the lake. The square is also framed by the old Palace of Justice, improperly called the Broletto, as well as the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto.

Arona. "Budello" (Via Cavour)

Pubblicato : Vendredi, 1 décembre, 2023 - 21:31

One cannot say one has visited Arona before having walked along Via Cavour, more commonly called 'Budello' by the people of Arona. This town street, particularly narrow in places, is the undisputed hub of the historic centre. One enters a beautiful pedestrian precinct where the town's main shopping centre is concentrated, with historic and prestigious shops. At the end of the street, the view opens onto Piazza del Popolo, directly overlooking the lake.
