Few tourists imagine that the name 'Bella' is not related to the adjective "pretty" , a well-deserved tribute to its artistic and scenic beauty, but derives from the name of Isabella d'Adda. Her husband, Count and Marquis Carlo Borromeo III, in fact decided to dedicate this small island, which was then known as Lower Island (Upper Island was instead what is now known as Isola Pescatori or Fishermen's Island), to her. The construction of the palace and garden contributed to making this island beautiful beyond doubt.
