The park comprises two mountain basins, Alpe Veglia in the Lepontine Alps at the head of the Val Cairasca on the Swiss border, and Alpe Devero in the Ossola Valley. An Alpine environment gentle in its undulating high-altitude meadows and austere in the severity of the great mountains and immense windswept mountain ranges. An environment modelled by man, the result of the work of countless generations of mountaineers, where the natural environment is characterised by wide pastures bordered by larch woods, with undergrowth of rhododendrons and blueberries, which fade into the high-altitude meadows. The great variety of environments determines the presence of numerous flora and fauna species of great naturalistic interest.
